The milk’s gone bad … and other observations from Slovenia

Slovenia was an awesome first stop for our adventure. Here is a list of observations as we wrap our first month of travel.

Milk bought from the store goes sour and bread molds more quickly in Slovenia – I take both of these as good signs, as it says “less preservatives” to me.

A little english goes a long way … kids in Slovenia learn english from the 1st (was 3rd) grade. This was really helpful for the kids to communicate with others in our neighborhood

The court behind our house was a godsend. The combination of kids, courts, english, made Stara Loka (our neighborhood) feel a lot like home. Kids could leave the apartment with a “headed out to play, be back in a bit.”

Fish 1 – Humans 0 … Slovenia is a world renowned fly fishing destination. Grant and I tried our hands a couple of days and the results were lackluster. 6 hours of fishing. Countless casts. 2 lost flies. 2 snapped lines. 4 times hooking our own backpack. Twice hooking our own clothing. Six times stepping on our line. Many indifferent fish. Thank you Petey Z, Nejc, and Robert Silverstein for lending equipment to make it all happen.

Lubnik is no joke … the local “Mt Abe” was Mount Lubnik. Which Annie and I did a couple of times. Steep, 1000 meters tall, enjoyed by families, pensioners, and athletes of all kinds.

Lake Bohinj > Lake Bled … Bled is beautiful, but there’s something about being surrounded by a ridge of rocky peaks – a sanctuary – that is so unique that it puts Bohinj on another level.

The Soca River and the Julian Alps are everything … speaking of next level…. these are amazing geological features, and so accessible. Upon our return we’ll spend more time in the Soca Valley and in the Julian Alps.

The kids are card players … pitch, hearts, and spades are all in the repertoire.

Lasso is just as good if not better, the next time around. Had a bit of a marathon the last two weeks. Delivers good messages, invokes good questions.
