On our third trip into Ljubljana we visited the castle up on the hill. We rode a gondola up to the castle with about 24 other people. When we got to the top we all squeezed out and took a look around the castle. There were many rooms with spears and uniforms that guards used to use many years ago. One thing that I found most interesting was an art gallery that I found in a little tunnel. The artist, Ciril Horjak, was very creative and all the displayed art was from his newspaper illustrations collection.
This first illustration shows one fish up against a big “boss” shark. The little fish is terrified. He’s going to get eaten alive. In the second half you see that the little fish gains support from his other little fishy friends and now they are the “boss”. This shows you that you can be powerful if you try!

In this next illustration the tourist, like many others, is not paying attention to the little things. He is stepping on the Eiffel Tower, the Colosseum, the castle in the middle of Lake Bled, Big Ben, the Sphinx and many others. He is also on his phone, his eyes appear to be closed and has a bunch of cameras…for what? I think this picture shows me he is not paying attention to the little things and he’s not keeping his eyes peeled for something that is crazy cool. He is instead ruining all the famous sites.

In this picture there are many “Pinocchios” in a row sitting on each others lies. They are supported by the lies the previous Pinocchio told. My interpretation of this illustration is that every lie you say matters because someone above you is “sitting on it”. The wood pecker represents when someone exposes your lie effecting a whole community.

In this last illustration you can see that the corona virus effects our everyday life. I think this picture describes how everyone would be on the beach on the weekend but instead there’s only one person. It reminds me of scary times during the beginning of the pandemic when we were all in social isolation.

Can you figure out what the meaning behind the rest of Ciril’s images?
